Check out Rory McIlroy’s gold Nike boots for The Players Championship

Rory McIlroy has worn a custom version of Nike’s Air Zoom Victory Tour shoe on two of his last three PGA Tour starts, dating back to the Genesis Open where he debuted a Hollywood-inspired colorway.

The special edition trend will continue this week at The Players Championship, where the four-time overall winner plans to wear a version that features an eye-catching gold sole and the tournament logo on the heel.

However, unlike the last two PE colorways McIlroy wore to the Genesis Open and Arnold Palmer invitation, this personalized offer will be accessible to the general public. Ten pairs of the gamer-themed Air Zoom Nike Victory Tour will be available to the public each day, Thursday through Sunday, for $200 through the on-site Fan Shop at TPC Sawgrass.

McIlroy collaborated with Nike during the creation process of the Air Zoom Victory Tour. The shoe is highlighted by the company’s React foam, a technology originally introduced in mid-2017 to the basketball space to provide a “soft and springy” feel with great stability that translates to the course .

As for why McIlroy and Nike picked gold for this week, it likely has something to do with the new gear the winner will receive — in addition to $2.25 million — on Sunday night. The new tournament trophy, designed by Tiffany & Co., is made of sterling silver and gold, with a base featuring a replica of TPC Sawgrass’ iconic “Island Green” 17th hole.

If McIlroy wins the Players Championship, he will be the first winner to have a matching pair of shoes for the trophy.
