‘Good Will Hunting’ bandmates Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are reuniting for a drama Affleck will direct for Amazon Studios, Skydance Sports and Mandalay Pictures, says Deadline.
Both Affleck and Damon will appear in the as-yet-untitled sports marketing film which follows “the story of how Sonny Vaccaro (Damon), a maverick sneaker salesman, ran a young running shoe company called Nike. in his pursuit of the most transformative athlete in sports history: Michael Jordan. Affleck will play Nike co-founder Phil Knight in the story surrounding Nike’s long-running effort to sign Jordan to his shoe company in the mid-’80s, an endorsement that seemed impossible at the time but would become the most significant relationship between a sports brand and an athlete and launched the global multi-billion dollar contemporary sneaker industry.
Sonny’s relentless quest to sign Jordan to what was then the third shoe company leads him to Jordan’s parents, and in particular his powerful and dynamic mother, as well as former coaches, advisers, friends and relatives of Michael. Jordan himself is a giant mythical figure hovering above the film and never before seen, while Sonny tries to reach him by accessing those close to him and around him.
Alex Convery wrote the original screenplay, which Damon and Affleck do a new pass on.
